1) Ellen: Wait! Let me explain. It's better to say that heaven is not here. Indeed the sort of paradise many seem to expect Haven to be, would be something that they would soon tire of. To enjoy perpetual bliss for an extended time would require so many changes to a typical human personality that in the end they would hardly be the same person. What sort of afterlife would that be, if you are no long, well, you? 2) Ellen: What happens here is a transition. From what you where on Earth, to what you might one day grow to be. You'll start here as a resident, as such there will be certain restrictions on you, much as a child must be protected from going too far from home. Later when you've learned more, you'll graduate to being a citizen. Beyond that, even we Hosts are uncertain what comes next and where the journey ends, but the journey does continue, perhaps forever. Jolan: Hosts? What are you? Are you an angel? Ellen: No. We don't use that term, too much baggage. I'm a host I'm here to help you. 3) Jolan: Help? How? Ellen: In many ways, for example the first thing you're going to need is a place to stay. Here is one possible place. Jolan: Isn't that a picture of the Earth? I'm going back? 4) Ellen: It's modeled after the Earth, but it's much smaller, it is really just an island in a pocket universe, you see we have many, each suited for people from a different time and culture in Earth's history. Normally I can tell which of these places would be best for you, but in your cases things are bit more complicated than normal. Jolan: Why? |
