1) Greek weddings of the 1st century were a complex affair as are weddings of all time periods tend to be. While traditions could vary from town to town, there were some common features. Everyone would wear their finest clothing, the brides dress is traditionally shades of red and yellow with a hood like veil. 2) Rather than an exchange or rings, the handing off of the bride by her father to the groom was seen as transfer of a symbolic captive. In a kind light this could be considered the pain of transition from childhood to marriage. Less kindly it could be seen as the symbolic reenactment of a kidnapping drama. 3) There would be a great feast and hired singers would sing ribald songs and make numerous libations. 4) Then dancers and torch bears would lead the party in a procession to the grooms home. Had there been children in the Havens, they would have played an important role carrying, not just flowers, but food and bread to distribute. 5) Then as they were about to enter the grooms home, he would unveil his new bride. 6) Sergious: Adonia!? |
